Have DS218+ in use and have expanded RAM to 8 GB with HyperX Impact HyperX Impact (2x, 4GB, DDR3L-1866, SODIMM 204)
RAM upgrade according to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch
But with more RAM you won't be able to upload/download/backup faster. It makes sense to upgrade ram if you run multiple apps on NAS or run virtual machines on it.
For copy jobs and video streaming, the 2 gb is enough.
Greetings
Strange. I have installed the same bolt. It is also recognised automatically. In my case, 10GB Ram is displayed. Possibly your bar is defective or you have not inserted it correctly. Which RAM slot did you use? There is an extra empty slot plus the one in which 2GB are already installed.
It does look illogical at first glance. However, such a question should be addressed to Digitec. Perhaps it has more to do with pricing policy. Previous buyers can be of little help.
The limit here is the 1Gbit connection... With 2X 6 TB WD Reds (JBOD) write speed 110-115Mbytes/s, so "maximum" why you take a PRO or a RED at WD, is due to that, the better warranty provisions and handling. For example, the REDs from WD have advance replacement from Western Digital itself. So weigh up which you like better, PRO or not. Speed should not be a big advantage with the PRO, if at all.
Wait, I have to ask the crystal ball... It's a little fuzzy... But I think it says... Better ask Synology directly, because they produce the goods... Who would have thought that :)
There are no hard disks in the Synology box; you have to buy them separately. I bought a set of "Synology DS218+" plus 2 WD hard disks each "WD Red 4TB, 3.5" " at Digitec and use the freeware "Cobian Backup / 11 Gravity". Once it's set up (needs expertise), it works splendidly.
With Cobian Backup you will find your files simply and unencrypted; it is like copying your files to an external hard disk yourself. Many other backup programmes (especially Windows) store the backup as a single, very large file, which you can only view with great effort.
With Cobian Backup, select "incremental" and then (under Advanced) Mirror task. With the mirror task, files that you have deleted do not remain as corpses in the backup, but are moved from the backup to a directory (of your choice), where you can then delete them if necessary (i.e. if the hard disk crashes).
The DS218+ has many more features, a faster processor, more RAM, more USB ports....... You can compare the two devices with each other. Simply click on "Compare" for both devices. Then you have a perfect overview of the differences. This will help you decide whether to buy or not. Buying the DS218+ is only worthwhile if the features of the DS218j are not enough.
Hello Manoure
I don't have this in operation myself, but with the following dongles it might work to integrate it into the network. Of course not comparable with LAN.

Greetings
I will take the liberty of rephrasing your question because I have the impression that you are not aware of everything.
The question is: What is the difference between a soft bundle and a complete bundle with hard disks installed? The soft bundle consists of the DiskStation and harddisks packaged separately and there is no operating system (DSM) installed. The buyer has to do this himself, but it is quite simple. But the price is a little lower.
Is that good?
You have to order one (or better two) hard disks in addition. However, the DS218+ is also available as a bundle, in which case hard disks are already built in.
For example: Synology DS218+ Softbundle (2 x 2TB, WD Red)
So you mean a Raid? (E.g. Raid1: 2x 1TB disk -> storage space of 1TB, but one disk can break without data loss).
Or combine two hard disks into one partition (e.g.: 2x 1TB disk -> partition of 2TB)
There are different solutions. Software or hardware (e.g. Raid controller, if you mean a Raid).
Windows offers the option "Storage spaces" in the control panel (display: small icons), this could possibly help you.
Synology NAS have individual apps such as DS file which does exactly what you describe.
Bonus tip: If you buy cheap, you buy twice. I had to find that out myself and am now very satisfied with the Synology DS218+.
