Question about Synology Ds218+
Are 2 hard disks already built into this product? Or do I have to buy them separately?
There are no hard disks in the Synology box; you have to buy them separately. I bought a set of "Synology DS218+" plus 2 WD hard disks each "WD Red 4TB, 3.5" " at Digitec and use the freeware "Cobian Backup / 11 Gravity". Once it's set up (needs expertise), it works splendidly.
With Cobian Backup you will find your files simply and unencrypted; it is like copying your files to an external hard disk yourself. Many other backup programmes (especially Windows) store the backup as a single, very large file, which you can only view with great effort.
With Cobian Backup, select "incremental" and then (under Advanced) Mirror task. With the mirror task, files that you have deleted do not remain as corpses in the backup, but are moved from the backup to a directory (of your choice), where you can then delete them if necessary (i.e. if the hard disk crashes).
