Question about Synology Ds218+

I currently have a DS215j with which I am very satisfied. However, it sometimes reaches its limits with Plex (depending on the end device) when, for example, a backup is being made, the data from Moments is being updated or recently when the virus scan was running at the same time. We like Moments, but access is just too slow. At first I thought it might be the connection, but the loading times in the same network at home are also subterranean. The upload data is 21.6 Mbit/s (10s average) according to cnlab multiple measurement. I don't want to get a new DS and then still have to deal with long loading times from Moments or DS Photo ets. (mobile, desktop at home, on the road). Does anyone have any experience with this?

Buy a high-performance router with an integrated switch of the same type. Ex: Asus RT-5300. Use the possibility to connect with 2 LAN cables to the Synology. Reconfigure all the network components (e.g. MTU). A 217+II memory upgraded and a 213. You Tube on several devices at the same time, plus up to 2 movie streams Synology -> TV, backup time controlled, no problem. A bit of work, but worth it.

So as I understand it, if I'm interpreting your description correctly, you seem to have a problem with your network speed rather than the NAS.
I dare say that the DS215j is basically fast enough. According to specs, up to 111MB/s (-> approx. 830Mbps) read and up to 87MB/s (-> approx. 730Mbps).

cnlab is a speed test for mobile devices, or have I overlooked something? That means you measured the speed from your mobile to the internet. So you have several factors that can influence the speed WLAN or 3G/4G - Internet connection (provider) - cnlab server (unlikely).
As a hint, WLAN can show extreme speed losses depending on the connection.

I would recommend that you check the speed in the network. From PC to PC (cable?), mobile to PC (WLAN), PC to NAS (cable?), mobile to NAS.
Here is a tool that you can install on all platforms: https://iperf.fr/
A guide for the NAS (3rd post on the page): https://forum.synology.com/enu...

As I said, I suspect the bottleneck somewhere in your network, so I would recommend you check everything there first before you buy a new NAS and the problem might persist.

The DS218+ has much more power than your DS215j and supports hardware transcoding for films up to 4K. So you can easily use Plex, make a backup and use DS Photo at the same time, that shouldn't be a problem at all.
