"Please explain to me why 'Pokémon Sword and Shield' is the highlight of the year"!

Are 400 Pokémon too few? What is a Hopplo and what the heck does dynamaximised mean? Pokémon expert Anja Oertly, who has been intensively involved with "Pokémon Sword and Shield", explains this and more. We start at 1.00 pm.

When my colleague Jan Heidenreich talks about the "game of the year", I have to smile. But he probably means the sales figures rather than the quality of "Pokémon Sword and Shield". Nevertheless. Although it feels like the hundredth instalment in the series, fans were also eagerly awaiting the latest spin-off with the pocket monsters.

Personally, the games have always left me cold. Like everyone else, I have played "Pokémon GO", but that's the end of my experience with the Pikachus of the world. Ah yes, the yellow blitzer is probably the only one I'm on a first-name basis with. That is about to change. My colleague Anja Oertly shows me why "Pokémon Sword and Shield" for the Switch is not a retort pocket monster collector, but one of the best games ever.

My current level of knowledge is as follows: You are a young Pokémon trainer who wants to become the best trainer and champion of the Galar region. To do this, you duel with anyone who looks at you the wrong way and throw your Pokémon, most of which are NOT called Pokémons, at them. The various regions are also infested with free-roaming Pokémon, which you also duel and cram into your red and white balls.

Like the rabbits, or rather the Woingenaus

Each area has an arena where a champion is waiting to be dethroned by you after you have successfully passed the corresponding arena challenge. There are OVER 400 Pokémon in the game, which also have brand new, stylishly animated attacks. Another new feature is that they can briefly go all Godzilla on you and become huge if you "dynamaximise" them. Try saying the word three times in quick succession.

Sometimes cuddly, sometimes nightmarish, these little creatures have been busy breeding and reproducing. 81 new creations can be found in "Sword" and "Shield". Here, too, the creators have gone all out with creative outpourings such as Schlapfel, Mortipot and Bimbosam. Find out for yourself which one I made up.

But the 400 Pokémon in the game are apparently too few for many fans. This has caused a lot of polemics in advance. Developer Game Freak counters. It was simply too time-consuming to animate the more than 1000 Pokémon. Instead, there are now also Dyna-Raids, where you can beat up Dynamax Pokémon with friends.

Got all that? Didn't? Good, then you're like me. But that's why I have Anja, who shows me in the Let's Play why never-ending monster collecting is one of the highlights of the year. Jan, maybe I owe you an apology.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
