After almost two years of Early Access, "Hades" has matured to version 1.0. Supergiant Games' latest prank is a blast, both visually and in terms of gameplay. Luca and I took on the gods.

From the hand-drawn graphic style to the dreamy music, Supergiant's craftsmanship can be felt in every corner. The astonishing thing is how much "Hades" has evolved in terms of gameplay and visuals from previous games. Almost two years in the Early Access phase have definitely done the game good.

Taking off is hard

In "Hades" you play Zagreus, son of "Hades", the ruler of the underworld. Because you are fed up with "Hades" - both your father and the realm - you try to flee to Olympus. In typical rogue-like fashion, you fight against hordes of mystical monsters until your life meter is empty and, after a bath of blood, you find yourself back in front of your father and the game starts all over again.

The different weapons such as sword, spear or shield as well as numerous upgrades that you can pick up on your escape attempts provide variety. With every room you successfully clear of enemies, a new reward awaits you. In addition to temporary improvements for your attacks, which are gone again on the next run, there are various currencies. You can use them to buy permanent upgrades, such as health points, new weapons or to expand Hades (the realm, not your father). How about life-giving fountains? All that fighting makes you thirsty.

Before each run, you will also receive an important first upgrade from gods such as Poseidon or Zeus. Apparently, you're not the only one who doesn't get on particularly well with grumpy Hades. The game gradually teaches you more about Zagreus, the underworld and its inhabitants. The story is surprisingly exciting and a welcome change from the constant beating.

Racy and action-packed

The gameplay requires good reflexes and knowledge of enemy attacks. Battles are wonderfully fast and explosive. The further you advance in Hades, the more difficult and nerve-wracking the levels become. The countless upgrades and combinations ensure that there is never a dull moment and that you will want to add another one after every run. Visually, the game is simply breathtaking. Supergiant has achieved a really big hit with "Hades".
