"Iron Man VR" - or rather, the charging simulator

In "Iron Man VR" you can feel like Tony Stark. Including waiting time, in which the superhero stands at the 3D printer until a new battle suit part is ready: "Iron Man VR" is full of loading screens. But it's not without its appeal.

Tony Stark has retired from the arms business. But just a few years later, his past catches up with him again. A hacker called "Ghost" wants to take revenge on Iron Man for the damage his weapons have caused. The story is not based on any comic book and was developed especially for the game. However, you shouldn't expect any real depth. "Iron Man VR" is more about making you feel like the legendary superhero.

Iron Man makes it look easier

With the Playstation VR on your head and the Move controllers in your hand, you slip into the gold and red battle suit. The controls are actually pretty clever. The Move controllers represent the nozzles of Iron Man's suit. If you hold them backwards, you fly forwards, if you point them downwards, you fly upwards and so on. You can shoot by simply targeting opponents with your hand.

Unfortunately, the age of the controllers, which date back to the PS3 era, is clearly noticeable. On the one hand, the four Playstation buttons are difficult to feel and on the other, the controllers are not particularly precise. Iron Man's controls feel a bit clumsy and I find it difficult to select the right weapons and not fly into a tower block at the same time, especially in hectic moments.

But when it does work, it's great fun chasing drones or flattening tanks with a ground slam. As the game progresses, you can equip your suit with new weapons and give it a new coat of paint.

Nothing to see here

It's just a shame that the presentation isn't really convincing either. Visually, the game looks like a PS3 title. Towns are conveniently always devoid of people, but otherwise look completely lifeless. Textures are muddy and pixelated, which is less distracting in the action scenes, but is clearly noticeable in the cutscenes.

And as if that wasn't all, you also need patience. A lot of patience. Before, during and after each mission, you sometimes have to wait over a minute for the game to load. Sometimes you stare into the black nothingness of your glasses and, if you're lucky, into a boring loading screen. Unlike with non-VR games, you can't bridge the time with your smartphone. I was literally twiddling my thumbs.

"Iron Man VR" is still not a bad game. If you've always wanted to be Iron Man, there's hardly anything better at the moment - also due to a lack of alternatives. VR is definitely not a gimmick and hovering around and taking enemies out of the air at the same time has its appeal. Nevertheless, it might be worth waiting until "Marvel's Avengers" is released. It could well be a flop, but at least it won't give you eye cancer.

"Iron Man VR" will be available for Playstation VR from 3 July.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
