March streaming highlights: the best movies and series of the month

Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, Sky Show or Prime Video, here are this month’s unmissable streaming highlights.

Overwhelmed with the choice of movies, series and documentaries? No problem! I’ve hand-picked the series and movies of the month for you.

West Side Story

At the age of 75, legendary director Steven Spielberg has dared to take on a musical for the first time. And not just any, but the remake of the 1961 classic «West Side Story». According to Rottentomatoes, film critics and audiences agree that Spielberg did everything right. Seven Oscar nominations, including in the important categories «Best Picture» and «Best Director», support this. A must-see for any musical fan like myself.

Bel-Air

At the beginning of the year, editor Jan Johansen wrote about the remake of the 1990s sitcom, mentioning that it’s now launched as a drama series. In fact, it all started with a fan trailer by young filmmaker Morgan Cooper. Will Smith, who gained fame with «The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air» in the 1990s, was so enthusiastic about the idea that he helped Cooper realise his vision. Will the genre change succeed?

Star Trek: Picard, season 2

Rumour has it that Patrick Stewart will reprise his role as mutant and X-Men leader Professor Charles Xavier in «Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness». However, there hasn't been an official confirmation. And fans of «Star Trek» are probably not too bothered, as they're looking forward to seeing Stewart's return as Admiral Jean-Luc Picard first. The second season of the series named after him could also be about multiverses and alternative timelines. This much is revealed in the trailer.

The Boys: Diabolical

It might be about «The Boys», but not yet about the long-awaited third season. There's currently only a tiny teaser for that. But the waiting time until the start on 3 June is supposed to be shortened by a rather violent, rather bloody and rather sick animated series. Each episode has its own style and tells its own story. Of course, Homelander, Billy Butcher and Black Noir will make guest appearances.

The Adam Project

A time travel film starring Ryan Reynolds, Zoe Saldana, Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Garner? Consider me hooked. Honestly, the trailer looks fantastic. It has that 1980s Spielberg charm of an «E.T.» or, more recently, «Stranger Things», even if the film isn't set in the 1980s. And even if the film doesn't turn out to be amazing, I somehow have the feeling that I'm going to like it anyway. Nostalgia just works for me.

Drive to Survive

«Drive to Survive» is a Formula One miniseries in the form of a documentary. This is the fourth season. Every season has been released just before the new Formula 1 season starts and it recounts the events of the previous year of racing. With the battle of the decade between Hamilton and Verstappen, this should be super dramatic. But very informative and exciting, too, as the past seasons have shown. For example, when Romain Grosjean’s car became engulfed in flames at the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2020.

Nightmare Alley

I a movie says «from Guillermo del Toro», I want to know more. Always. After all, the incredibly creative director with a passion for the creepy directed some of my favourite movies. His two «Hellboy» films, for example, or «Pan’s Labyrinth» and «The Shape of Water», which won him the Oscar for best director in 2018. Since then, we haven’t heard much from the Mexican director. This might soon change – if «Nightmare Alley», which is nominated for Best Picture this year, wins the golden statue.

Euphoria, season 2

If you've never heard of «Euphoria», it’s the series where ex-Disney child star Zendaya explains the ins and outs of dick pics. All the while, she’s headed to total self-destruction using all sorts of pills and drugs – it’s so blatant that I kept thinking: thank God that’s not my life. In the U.S., the series airs on HBO. In Switzerland, it’s available on Sky. And judging by the trailer, the second season is no less dramatic than the first one.

Halo the Series

I have confession to make: I've never played «Halo». I have no idea whether the trailer does honour or shame to the game. From my completely external point of view, however, I think the series looks good visually. The Master Chief seems to be a badass – yep, he's an iconic figure, even I've noticed – and the action looks gripping indeed. Or doesn't it? You tell me.

Bridgerton, season 2

Caution: if you want to catch up with the first season, you'd better not watch this trailer. It contains a nasty spoiler.

Netflix’ surprisingly massive hit is advancing to the next round. No, not «Squid Game». «Bridgerton»! I'll be blunt: I love the series. It’s soap opera at its finest. And I mean «finest» the way I said it. Gripping story. Great humour. Intrigues. Sex. Secrets. And lots of gossip. I had no clue I was into that kind of thing. Superb!

Moon Knight

Who is Moon Knight from the next Marvel series? I explored the question in this article. The short answer: Moon Knight is Marc Spector, a mentally disturbed mercenary with dissociative identity disorder who, at least that’s what he thinks, is in the service of the moon god Khonshu. He sees himself as Moon Knight, the fist of Khonshu, the pathfinder, watcher, defender, and the watcher of overnight travellers. Moon Knight is played by Oscar Isaac. Ethan Hawke plays the villain Mephis ... er, Arthur Harrow. I doubt that the series will be as brutal and bloody as the comic. Nevertheless, I can’t wait for Moon Knight to start.
