We have the lowest electric taxes in the world and yet, as far as cameras are concerned, we have a high price in Switzerland. Is the price already final or is there still room for improvement?
We also have the highest wages in the world. And very low taxes. Surely the price will go down at some point. That is always the case.
In the USA, the R5 costs $3899 (without taxes) in the official Canon shop. If you convert that into CHF at today's exchange rate (1/0.92), it's 3587 CHF (without VAT). With VAT, it's around 3850 CHF. Personally, I find it audacious of Canon to come up with a surcharge of over 600 CHF.
The prices are about 500 CHF too high compared to the USA. Taking into account VAT and the exchange rate, the camera should cost 3950 CHF. Only when it has reached this realistic value will I buy it. I don't see why we Swiss (tax taken into account) should pay more than the Americans!
I think digitec is simply hedging its bets with the pre-orders. I would just wait until the camera is available everywhere and the price has settled.
