I want to buy this Power-Saving Back-Up UPS to replace my old APC 550GI (will be included with a scan unit). Does it work?

In principle, yes. You just have to keep in mind that your old unit has a master-slave function. This one does not. If you don't need this function, you can replace it without any problem.
