Hey matrix8127 The Play versions are designed more for video transcoding. The DS216+II is faster in data throughput when reading and writing. In addition, the NASes have different CPUs. The 216+II has the more powerful one and has one more USB slot. In addition, the 216+II can manage 10 more network cameras, but it consumes a little more power.

No, that works just as well here (and even a little bit more). Video transcoding is the process of converting video files that were not originally supported by a media player into a compatible format. For example, if your TV or iPad cannot read the format you want to play, the Synology DS216play will automatically convert the video to an appropriate format that is supported and can therefore be played, depending on what device you are accessing that file from on the NAS. The advantage of this is that you don't have to manually convert a video to a zillion different formats on your PC via software in order to enjoy it. Of course, if your device fully supports the original file, it doesn't need to be transcoded and will play directly, without re-converting, intermediate buffering, etc. See also the following article from Synology: https://www.synology.com/de-de/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/Mobile/Can_my_Synology_NAS_transcode_videos_for_my_device However, if you do not need the whole thing or if you usually already store your files in a compatible format on the NAS and perhaps always play them on the same device, you do not necessarily have to buy a product with "play".

With the DS Video iOS app, it is only possible to switch to another app if playback fails. With VLC, however, everything can be played (retrieval/list via DNLA or similar), but the iOS VLC app is now limited because only a few formats are supported. The Infuse app actually supports all formats.

so the wd red pro 6tb does a maximum of 280mb/s, a minimum of 95mb/s and on average about 175mb/s... the synology enclosure allows you a maximum of 107mb/s where 1Gbit = a maximum of 125mb/s. but because of the 30.- more per disk the hd with 5 years warranty (red pro) vs. 2 years (purple) or 3 years (red without pro) is more important in my opinion. so you have made a good decision - have fun with your new toy!

OK, I got it. Pretty funny. - HotSwap : I can swap a disk without downtime (I don't need that). - USB Copy looks pretty interesting but even Synology doesn't agree. On this page you can see that it also includes DS216play: https://www.synology.com/en-global/dsm/packages/USBCopy

The 216+ has a slightly faster CPU and minimally better data throughput, plus it has one more USB 2.0 and one more esata port than the Play. If you don't have any special requirements and really only need the thing as a NAS, you can probably save the money for the 216+.
