What does this video transcoding do exactly? Do I have to install a media server ap on the Synology for this to work? So far, I have simply streamed from the Synology with my Sony Bravia TV via Kodi. Are there better ways?

Helpful answer

No, that works just as well here (and even a little bit more).

Video transcoding is the process of converting video files that were not originally supported by a media player into a compatible format. For example, if your TV or iPad cannot read the format you want to play, the Synology DS216play will automatically convert the video to an appropriate format that is supported and can therefore be played, depending on what device you are accessing that file from on the NAS. The advantage of this is that you don't have to manually convert a video to a zillion different formats on your PC via software in order to enjoy it. Of course, if your device fully supports the original file, it doesn't need to be transcoded and will play directly, without re-converting, intermediate buffering, etc. See also the following article from Synology: https://www.synology.com/de-de...

However, if you do not need the whole thing or if you usually already store your files in a compatible format on the NAS and perhaps always play them on the same device, you do not necessarily have to buy a product with "play".
