I don't think there's anything you can do. The hard disk comes with a simple backup software that does not encrypt anything. So it's useless. The hard drive is otherwise very good and inexpensive.

Actually, yes, usb is downward compatible, but it makes little sense because the transfer speed is much slower than usb 2.0.

I can recommend the Seagate HD, it has SATA III fast interface with USB 3. It should be sufficient for your requirements. I don't understand this question - I bought this as an enclosure with a hard drive. It has no (visible) screws at all. You would have to destroy the enclosure... Isn't it better to buy a 2.5 hard drive without an enclosure, like Seagate BarraCuda (5TB, 2.5") ?
