Is this external hard drive fast enough to store photos and videos and edit them directly on it? (incl. video rendering etc.) or is even a portable SSD not enough? Does anyone have any experience with this?

I can recommend the Seagate HD, it has SATA III fast interface with USB 3. It should be sufficient for your requirements. However, for video editing, if you are using a professional pgm, I would edit on the internal drive first. The SSD Standard HD are also equipped with SATA III interface. If you are looking for a luxury solution, I would prefer an internal Samsung SDD with M2 interface. However, your PC/NB must have a corresponding M2 slot.
