The iMac monitors (2010 and older) also accepted a DP signal at their Thunderbolt 1 connection. This is no longer possible with all newer ones, only real Thunderbolt works. As far as I know, there are no USB-C to Thunderbolt adapters; a USB-C port is always required that is also capable of Thunderbolt (recognisable by the lightning symbol next to the port). There are new Windows notebooks that can do this. For PCs, there are plug-in cards for retrofitting a Thunderbolt connection.
According to the vintage of the IMac, it is certainly a 4K model and therefore the IMac cannot be used as a display for the MacBook.
Hello Tebaldi, as far as I know, unfortunately this does not work. There is a mode on the IMacs up to 2014 called 'Display Target' that does something similar, but this only works with a Thunderbolt cable and only with an Apple product as the source of the signal.
Should work - have MacBook Air with Thunderbolt port and external monitor via HDMI - all good but when I connect my Thunderbolt display to MacBook Pro and then connect external monitor with HDMI from Thunderbolt display via Thunderbolt port (daisy chain) HDMI monitor does not work :(
Without problems - SURFACE Pro4, Ful 4 K Movie on 8K TV...
Yes, this is possible as long as your MacBook Air has a Thunderbolt/MiniDP port.
