The wiring is as follows: Pin 1 = Ground (shielding, ground), Pin 2 = Signal (hot), Pin 3 = Signal- (cold). When transmitting signals, it is important to avoid asymmetrical signal transmission, especially on stage, in the studio, or in the rehearsal room. Asymmetrical signal transmission should be kept as short as possible and converted to symmetrical signal transmission as quickly as possible, unless it involves low-impedance instrument or speaker signals.

Guitar cables, for example, are asymmetrically (unbalanced) wired. A symmetrical (balanced) cable consists of two signal conductors: Pin 1 for signal hot, Pin 2 for signal cold, and a ground conductor. The signal conductors are twisted against each other, and the ground serves as a shield. Since the signals on the conductors are out of phase, interference is canceled out. Therefore, a symmetrical cable is much less susceptible to interference and hum loops over longer distances than an asymmetrical cable.
