digitec playground cup: Saturday's the big day
by Philipp Rüegg
The online retailer digitec is organising the first esports cup in the company's history: «digitec Playground». This Saturday, eight teams will compete in the final round of the tournament and show off their skills in the first-person shooter game Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
The big showdown will take place on 19 October: the finals of the esports tournament «digitec Playground» will see the best Swiss amateur gamers and semi-pros of «Counter-Strike: Global Offensive» (CS:GO for short) go head to head. From a total of 128 teams of five players each and after two qualification rounds, seven teams remain. The eighth spot in the final is taken by the digitec employee team via wildcard.
digitec is broadcasting the final from 1 p.m. to about 6 p.m. live on YouTube with comments and analyses from Galaxus editor Simon Balissat and CS:GO expert Remo 'rMo' Blaser. The digitec team will play in the eStudios in Zurich, while all other teams join online. The final is played in a knockout format and one game per round is broadcast live. The prizes, sponsored by Logitech and HP Omen.
«Team digitec» will be filmed while they’re competing in the eStudios in Zurich, so anyone has the chance to watch them compete. «We’re clear underdogs,» says Luis Loureiro, captain of team digitec and employee at the control centre of the Digitec Galaxus warehouse in Wohlen AG. «But we’re looking forward to the challenge.»
These are the teams competing in the final, ordered by points scored in the qualification rounds:
digitec and gaming make a good match: the three digitec founders Oliver Herren, Florian Teuteberg and Marcel Dobler were passionate gamers 18 years ago. One of the reasons why they founded the company was because the PC components they were looking for weren’t available in Switzerland or couldn’t be ordered at a reasonable price. «We still enjoy gaming, just like many employees of Digitec Galaxus,» says CEO Florian Teuteberg. «We’ve long been thinking about launching our own esports tournament.»
The game CS:GO, however, was the customers’ choice: over 3,000 Community members took part in a public vote to select the game. 18 percent voted for the tactical first-person shooter. «Rainbow Six Siege», «Overwatch» and «Super Smash Bros. Ultimate» were also popular choices.
digitec Playground is a pilot project. The success of the final on Saturday will determine whether there will be more tournaments in the future. «This cup will decide about our potential long-term participation in the esports scene,» says David Kübler, project manager at Digitec Galaxus. However, one thing is for sure: digitec Playground will always belong to the Community.
Let the games begin!
