The Haswell-R sweet spot

IMHO, the 1231 has been Intel's best CPU in this price range since its launch, unless of course you need the iGPU. Then, obviously, the 1231 is a not an option, and you might want to look at the i7 (K-series especially) as prices converge very quickly after the 300.- mark.

Here's a brief description of my use case:
- Personal workstation
- OS is Debian Jessie
- Main use is web development and constantly building and provisioning both server and desktop VMs.

The box with the 1231 at its core performs admirably. The cooling is all stock, but the temps stay very close to idle, even when cores are active during builds or similar. No problems with GNU/Linux whatsoever. The system's 100% stable, even though the RAM is non-ECC (no time to find anything from ASRock's QVL, sorry).

The last point I really want to stress and really the major reason why I picked this particular CPU to build my system around is the quad core and HT support, since I really need this, and I need to work it smoothly. Which, amazingly, is exactly what you get for 263.-! The price for a 4/8 configuration, on a pretty fast (3.40/3.80 eats tasks, it's beautiful)., is unbelievable to me.

In conclusion, I feel that the E3-1231v3 is a really good deal: you can't get a cheaper multi-threaded quad-core, and, aside from the iGPU, it performs as well as the similarly-clocked i7s.

Pro

  • Incredible price/performance
  • Runs cool with (pretty decent!) stock fan
  • A Xeon that runs very well on cheap components (H97, non-ECC RAM)

Contre

  • Too many gamers buying it now; price is going up! :)
