Question about Canon EOS R6

Why doesn't the Canon R6 have 30Mpx like the Canon R which is half the price? That way you could crop better, which I often do. The R5 would be better for this but too expensive for me :(

Helpful answer

I understand the concern, on paper it looks like this is a disadvantage when comparing.

I would choose the R6 over the R any day. Especially because of the autofocus. The autofocus of the R6 and R5 is a leap you can feel. And you really feel it. Once you've tried it, you don't want to go back.

The difference in resolution is comparatively minimal and insignificant. The few pixels more resolution are distributed in two dimensions. The few times when the focus is not quite right on the R and it is on the R6 make up for it anyway.

If you really need more resolution, you need a camera like the R5 with 40+ MP. But most people won't need that. I see this in special applications like landscape photography (for large prints) and wildlife (for cropping), but even there it's not mandatory. 20 MP is more than enough even in 2021.

I have both (R and R6), I only use R6, R is just a backup... I find the image quality about the same, I've made a few comparisons...

With Lightroom you can easily improve the images to 80mp, it works wonderfully.

( Of course I would prefer the R5 but you have to be a real pro ^^ )
