Shouldn't there be a protective cap? I saw it at a colleague's place, but there was nothing there.

Hello D.gertsch, the protective cap (made of plastic) is available on the 100W model, InCharge X. The cap is ingenious for use as a key ring, but the InCharge X is a bit more expensive.
