How thick can the diameter of the lenses be? So would a lens with a 72mmø fit on it?
You must mean the outer diameter at the front of the lens? 72mm, that has nothing to do with the mount itself, if it's a Nikon lens you'll fit it without any problem.

Every lens with a Nikon-F bayonet fits the D5300. You can find the corresponding lenses here at digitec under Lenses -> Lens bayonet -> Nikon-F. Lenses with the suffix "DX" are particularly suitable for the D5300.
