I have bought a Panasonic TV. When I want to make a recording on the USB hard drive, it doesn't work every time. Is it possible that the hard drive needs more power than the USB port on the TV supplies? Would such a Y-cable be useful here?

Yep, that's exactly what the cable is for! Red is the additional power supply, black is the data transmission.
