Does the power supply work when only one of the 2 connectors is plugged in? I'd like to connect one connector to a power source that's (almost) always available and the other to an intermittent source so that the device always stays on.

Yes, the power supply is connected to the 2 sockets, but the data is only on one of the sockets.

Yes, that works: The black plug is for power and data, the red one only for (additional) power.
