Can you use it to connect an external SSD to an iPad Air? Can I use it to connect a Windows 10 notebook with USB C / Thunderbolt to an iPad Air for data transfer?

With a Win10 notebook you can connect it safely. Connecting an external SSD should be possible in principle, I don't have the knowledge of Apple to answer that conclusively, but according to a quick Google search it should be OK.

I have had no experience of this. Most probably not. Because I only use it to connect MacBook Pro and iPad.
