LWL = TOSLINK is a standardized optical fiber connection system for optical signal transmissions in the range of up to about 20 Mbit/s. It has gained widespread use due to its application in the digital transmission of audio signals in consumer goods, where it is used, for example, for transmission between components such as CD and DVD players and audio amplifiers. It employs an optical fiber (LWL) made of transparent plastic (PMMA or polycarbonate, abbreviated as POF) with a core diameter of 1 mm. The large diameter allows for the coupling of light emitted from LEDs using a specially shaped focusing lens—laser diodes are not required. POF has a smaller bending radius at the same diameter but higher attenuation than glass optical fibers, so the ranges are limited to about 100 meters, practically around 10 meters. The advantage of an optical fiber connection in audio technology is that it achieves electrical isolation between device components, thus avoiding ground loops. Additionally, optical fibers are insensitive to electrical and magnetic interference. Furthermore, interference radiation from electrically transmitted digital signals is avoided.
