I wouldn't mess around with it. The Sony MIS hot shoe is quite sensitive, especially at the front with the fine contacts. I would mount a cage or L bracket with a cold shoe and screw the Mik on there. Example from Smallrig SmallRig Sony A6600 (Cage)

I use the USB-C cable from the microphone, and then place my computer near the microphone. My computer also has USB-C inputs, so I could also use USB-C to USB-C cables, which are also sold as long cables. But I haven't tried that yet. If you use the USB to USB-C cable, then you prevent the battery from draining (I think). The jack cable that comes with the device is not very long.

The VideoMic NTG is a technically flawless device, I am thrilled. There will always be a loss of sound quality the further away the microphone is. At a distance of 2-3m, a lavalier mic would certainly record cleaner, but yes, with more effort. But you will still understand the students well, just be prepared for some reverberation and background noise.
