I would like to use it for my PS4. Anyone had experience with this? Can I plug this into my PS4 Slim to connect my keyboard and mouse?

Yes, USB is USB. Since the Slim only has connections at the front: it won't look very nice, because cables stick out in three directions and the part hangs around quite freely.

I have a hard disc without its own power supply and would like to use it as a recorder on a Panasonic TV with a USB 3.0 interface. Panasonic recommends only using hard discs with their own power supply. Can this device be used for this purpose? The hard disc works on the TV, but I would like to provide it with its own power supply.

Works best with its own power supply. I used to have a 4 port USB 2 HUB, but it doesn't work properly.

Is the hub suitable for devices such as the Powerplay mousepad from Logitech, which requires 1.8W?

It comes with a 3A power supply, so unless all the devices being connected need a lot of power, it should be fine.

Is the hub also backwards compatible? i.e. can it also be connected to USB 2.0 and use the USB 2.0 output? output?

Absolutely, it is never a problem to plug a USB 2 connector into a USB 3 socket, as long as the device you want to operate does not require any extra juice.
