Product image incorrect? Is it possible that the first picture does not correspond to the product? According to the manufacturer's website, the MH494-BH looks like the second picture.

Does anyone know what threaded socket the Manfrotto MH494 Mini ball head has. Is it 3/8" so that you can mount it on a Manfrotto tripod?

It is a 5/8" threaded bush, so wider.

Does this head fit the Manfrotto MM290C4? I bought a 600 zoom and want to be able to switch between the tripod and monopod quickly and have the same plate on both. At the moment I have the Manfrotto Befree. Will it fit or is it a stupid idea?

The head fits the MM290C4. You don't write which head you use on the Befree, but if the head was in the kit, there is a high probability that the plates are the same. How much sense it makes to switch frequently between 1-leg and 3-leg tripods probably depends on the camera system and especially personal preference/working/hobby technique. For me (and my areas of application), constantly changing and carrying two large tripods would be nothing.
