No. Operating instructions and the data transmitted by the transmitters are shown on the display.

can the device handle large media libraries (approx. 40,000 MP3s) fluently? And does it handle Airplay under iOS 11?

Yes, it can. It accesses my server directly with almost 1 TB of music and audio plays. The display shows the file directory by folder with about 4 files (lines). If there are many files, you have to scroll, which works very smoothly. So far, the transfer via AirPlay (iPad/iPhone) has worked perfectly. However, I have not yet tried it with iOS 11. Price/performance is top.
