can the device handle large media libraries (approx. 40,000 MP3s) fluently? And does it handle Airplay under iOS 11?

Yes, it can. It accesses my server directly with almost 1 TB of music and audio plays. The display shows the file directory by folder with about 4 files (lines). If there are many files, you have to scroll, which works very smoothly.
So far, the transfer via AirPlay (iPad/iPhone) has worked perfectly. However, I have not yet tried it with iOS 11.
Price/performance is top.
