No, it does not work. I use the "RaidSonic ICY BOX ext.1x3.5/2.5" IB-AC705-6G enclosure", which comes with a power supply unit. In addition, the HD can be installed in the enclosure. I use this part for a WD green and it works perfectly.

The first answer is certainly not correct...! The following is correct: Of course you can connect a hard disk via USB to the PC, as long as it is a 2.5" HDD. Unlike 3.5" HDDs, it receives its supply voltage via the data connector. This is actually clearly stated in the product description.
