Hello Birdsofpray In a printer that uses toner, it is essential that the toner cartridge with integrated developer (roll) is not allowed to run out. Problem A: If the toner powder is too low, the printout will be very light. Full-surface images become increasingly lighter/paler towards the bottom. Problem B: Due to the lack of toner on the develop roll, the drum is worn out (damaged), which ultimately leads to earlier replacement and higher costs. Unfortunately, I cannot say whether there are still printers today with toner only as a "reservoir", i.e. without developer. Perhaps there are other users who will get in touch. If your main interest is to print something "empty", then I would recommend an inkjet printer.
