Polylactic acid is a polymer that consists, among other things, of lactic acid molecules. A heated bed is beneficial for PLA filament but not strictly necessary. We recommend using a cooling fan when processing PLA filament. Furthermore, PLA has significantly more pleasant odor properties than other plastics during processing. However, the temperature at which PLA begins to soften is relatively low. Even at high temperatures in summer, PLA parts can easily deform!
PLA is fundamentally biodegradable under specific conditions. However, the final product contains pigments and additives. Therefore, PLA parts must still be disposed of in waste and not in the garden.
Properties:
- Minimal shrinkage
- Low warping
- Low water absorption
- Soluble in many organic solvents
- High UV resistance
- Low flammability
- Heat resistance up to about 60°C
PLA filament, or polylactic acid, is generally biodegradable, but certain environmental conditions are necessary, which are usually only found in industrial composting facilities. In nature, PLA typically does not decompose. Therefore, we recommend not composting PLA filament or printed parts made from PLA.
