The Leica Q3 combines classic and modern timeless design with new technologies that have never been seen before in the Q series. The third-generation Q3 uses the same fixed focal length and full-frame design that has proven effective in the Q and Q2 cameras, but improves performance with a 60MP sensor, a new hybrid autofocus system, 8K video recording, and upgraded electronic viewfinder and LCD displays.
The Q3 features the same 60MP full-frame CMOS sensor as the M11 flagship model. This high-resolution sensor is equipped with a back-illuminated (BSI) design that offers improved noise performance and faster readout speeds, benefiting both photography and video applications. The higher resolution is particularly well-suited for capturing detailed subjects such as landscapes and architectural topics, and the noise reduction of the BSI design enhances clarity and color accuracy when working in low light at higher ISO values.
The resolution added by the 60MP sensor also enables unique digital zoom capabilities that simulate working with different focal length lenses: 1.25x cropping mimics a 35mm focal length, 1.8x cropping mimics a 50mm focal length, 2.7x cropping mimics a 75mm focal length, and 3.2x cropping mimics a 90mm focal length.
One of the most significant updates in the Q3 is the inclusion of the hybrid autofocus system, which leverages phase detection in conjunction with contrast detection and Depth from Defocus (DFD) autofocus for faster and more accurate focus on moving subjects or in challenging lighting conditions. The addition of the phase detection system also enables an intelligent subject recognition system that can detect and track eyes, faces, bodies, and animals in the frame.
