Product details

Faber-Castell Pitt Monochrome soft black square chalk offers the highest lightfastness, is free of fat and oil, and is easily smudgeable. It is ideal for large-scale work as well as graphic details and is traditionally used for figure drawing. Burnt chalks are harder and more brittle than unburnt ones. The color pigments do not adhere easily to the paper and therefore need to be fixed. Unburnt chalks have special binders that provide a soft and smooth texture. The pigments are rubbed into the paper surface, and fixing is not necessary. There is a distinction between fat-free and fat-containing chalks. Fat-free chalks can be relatively easily smudged and also worked wet. The color sits relatively loosely on the drawing surface and should always be fixed. Fat-containing chalks adhere more firmly to the paper due to the oil and wax-based binder. They have a smooth application with a satin finish, are harder to smudge, and are only limitedly erasable, but do not necessarily need to be fixed.
