Faber-Castell Pitt Monochrome square chalk umbra unburned. Highest lightfastness, fat- and oil-free, easily smudgeable. Ideal for large-scale work as well as graphic details, traditionally used for figure drawing. Burned chalks are harder and more brittle than unburned ones. The color pigments do not adhere easily to the paper and therefore need to be fixed. In unburned chalks, special binders provide a soft and smooth texture. The pigments are worked into the surface of the paper, and fixing is generally not necessary. There is also a distinction between fat-free and fat-containing chalks. Fat-free chalks can be relatively easily smudged and also worked wet. The color sits relatively loosely on the drawing surface and should always be fixed. Fat-containing chalks adhere more firmly to the paper due to the oil- and wax-based binder. They have a smooth application with a satin finish. Additionally, they are harder to smudge and only limitedly erasable, but do not necessarily need to be fixed.
