The size of a hearing aid battery is coded by a number (type) and a colour scheme. Yellow 10 batteries from audisana have a yellow seal and yellow packaging, and also bear the IEC code PR70.

The colour code of the protective foil on the zinc-air batteries is the same for almost all hearing aid battery manufacturers worldwide. The packaging, also known as the blister pack, often also has a corresponding colour marking that defines the battery type.

Standard designations for zinc-air hearing aid batteries are defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC for short) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI for short), as is the case for Audisana hearing aid batteries. Major battery manufacturers also use additional, manufacturer-specific names for these sizes, such as PR536.

Why zinc-air technology for hearing aid batteries?
Zinc-air hearing aid batteries have a particularly high energy density and offer an almost horizontal discharge curve. They are therefore the optimum power supply for hearing aids in particular. The air holes in the battery are initially covered with a protective film. This keeps it in a 'resting state' until it is needed. The system-related self-discharge of zinc-air batteries with a protective film attached is only around 3 % per year. The foil is removed when the battery is inserted into the hearing aid. After a few seconds of activation, the battery begins to emit current. When activated (protective foil removed), zinc-air batteries have a limited shelf life and should be used as soon as possible.
