Background information
Tracing back the digitec phishing e-mails
by Dominik Bärlocher
Tech Tuesday brings together professionals from the tech industry in Zurich. In addition to socialising, there are exciting presentations on a specific topic at each event. Last Tuesday, the topic was IT security and I talked about the phishers who were after their targets' bank details.
Zurich is one of Switzerland's major technology centres. Google has an entire campus here, eBay has its Swiss headquarters in the city and we at digitec.ch have our roots here. Every two months, the companies give us a glimpse into their cards: Tech Tuesday features presentations on predetermined topics and networking. The event takes place every two months and is open to everyone. You can find more information about the English-language event on the official Tech Tuesday website.
At the latest Tech Tuesday, we were invited by Nino Maspoli, news editor at NZZ, to talk about the phishing attack we had to deal with last year. Back then, we didn't just publish a boring security advisory, but deciphered the code and did a bit of detective work where we tried to find the culprit.
The stories not only spread like wildfire, but also attracted a lot of media attention. Apparently, it's not often that a company deals openly with the problem of cybercrime. We do, because we know that you, dear reader, are interested in security and we are therefore happy to share our knowledge with you.
In the video above you can see my presentation given in English and you can watch the presentation here.
