I love the PS5 controller – awesome vibrations, adaptive triggers, motion control, and other cool gimmicks. These games make the best use of Sony's DualSense.

It doesn't get better than the DualSense. Sony's PS5 controller continues to offer a unique blend of solid basic functions, ergonomics, and fun gimmicks.

The precision and impact of the haptic feedback remain unmatched – even Nintendo's new Switch 2 Pro Controller can't keep up. The adaptive triggers are still an innovative unique selling point – it feels magical when the shoulder buttons provide resistance or rattle when pressed. Also included in the feature mix: precise motion control, a touchpad, speakers, and even a microphone. The DualSense is truly the Swiss Army knife of controllers.

Unfortunately, relatively few PS5 games make meaningful use of these great features. Occasionally, gaming gems appear that reignite my love for this piece of technology and remind me how awesome this controller is. This happened with the review of Insomniac's «Wolverine» adaptation. The brutal carnage would be only half as fun without the brilliant DualSense features.

«Wolverine» inspires me to look back. I scroll through my PS5 game library, searching for the titles that use the unique DualSense in the best, most creative, or most absurd ways.

«Wolverine»

Let's start with the game that inspired this post. Insomniac's «Wolverine» adaptation isn't perfect. Lame story, uninteresting characters, dusty AAA formula. However, what the studio did succeed at is the action and the implementation of the DualSense features.

When I run through the levels, I feel every step the mutant takes thanks to precise vibrations. In combat, powerful pulses confirm that I've hit enemies – or that I've been hit myself. For critical hits, I use the L2 and R2 triggers. If I sink Wolverine's claws into an enemy, I feel resistance. Also awesome – and helpful! – is the speaker. With blade sounds, the controller tells me whether I'm successfully parrying in hectic combat. The mix of these DualSense features creates an incredibly satisfying combat feel and immensely enriches the action spectacle.

Without the controller, the carnage wouldn't be the same.

«Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart»

Insomniac already did a lot right with this PS5 platformer. The use of the adaptive triggers is particularly impressive. Depending on how hard I press the shoulder buttons, I activate different firing modes for my crazy sci-fi weapons. Gentle resistance and hard stops in the trigger tell me which weapon I need to press how hard.

«Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart» is also convincing outside of firefights. The controller lets me feel every step, every jump, and every grind on intergalactic rails. The speaker tells me when I've collected items and always puts a smile on my face with other fun gimmicks and sound effects.

«Astro Bot»

I'm not exaggerating when I say: «Astro Bot» is fucking perfect. I've never played a platformer that controls so well and feels so satisfying as «Astro Bot» – «Super Mario» included.

Every surface in the game feels different with subtle vibrations. I feel grass, metal, and wood. In the ball pit, I could swear I feel all the balls in the controller. If I swim, the controller bubbles away. The trigger usage varies depending on the item used. Sometimes I feel strong or weak resistance; when flying with the jetpack, the trigger rattles against my finger. All of this is complemented by numerous sound effects that emanate from the controller and feel like magic in harmony with the haptic feedback. Motion control and even the microphone (blowing into the controller!) are also used creatively in various scenarios.

If you're not sure if the game is for you: «Astro's Playroom» gives a good taste of the creative ideas in «Astro Bot» – a free game you get when you buy a PS5. So, go for it! I promise you won't regret it.

«Call of Duty»

«Call of Duty» has been getting a lot of hate lately. Rightfully so. Catastrophic single-player campaigns, ugly multiplayer skins, and annoying monetization options bother the fanbase. However, one thing must be granted to Activision: they have been making excellent use of the PS5 controller for years.

The «Call of Duty» games offer the most detailed and best settings for motion-controlled aiming. I use the right analog stick for rough camera movements and adjust with small movements of the controller. This allows me to aim quickly and precisely and dish out headshot after headshot.

In the options, I can adjust dozens of settings for motion control to my needs. For example, gyro aiming can even be switched on and off «on the fly» with a quick touch of the touchpad. The use of haptic feedback and the adaptive triggers is also successful – even if other shooters on this list are a bit more mature in this regard.

«Horizon Forbidden West»

Guerilla Games' post-apocalyptic adventure was the perfect example of using adaptive triggers at launch. When I draw a bow with Aloy, I feel the tension in the shoulder buttons and hear the taut string from the speaker. Is it necessary? No. Does it feel awesome? Damn right. I want to do nothing but archery all day.

The motion control also feels very successful. Thanks to precise gyro aiming, I hit individual body parts of the dino-robots more reliably than with the rough stick control. The DualSense package is rounded off by a wide range of vibration patterns in combat and exploration. Nice bonus: with a swipe of the touchpad, I can show or hide HUD info.

«Ghost of Yotei»

Speaking of bow and arrow: «Ghost of Yotei». The second samurai epic from Sucker Punch also uses adaptive triggers and motion control for archery. Overall, I like the implementation in «Horizon» a bit better – there are more setting options there. On the other hand, «Ghost of Yotei» offers more precise and varied haptic feedback. Whether running, sneaking, or galloping on my trusty horse.

Unexpected sound effects keep coming from the controller speaker. I especially like it when the protagonist Atsu starts a song on her Shamisen. The touchpad is used the most in «Ghost of Yotei» out of all the games on this list. With swipe gestures, I activate wind navigation, bow to show respect, or draw my sword. It feels right and natural. The game also surprises with other touchpad gimmicks – for example, when I light a fire in a camp and spray sparks with my finger.

«Control»

No other game on this list offers such creative vibration patterns and trigger resistance as «Control». The crazy sci-fi weapons all feel completely different. With the «Charge» gun, I feel how I charge shots in three stages – both with my finger on R2 and with the massive shaking of the entire controller. The «Pierce» gun, on the other hand, creates a loud «Bzzzzt» noise, accompanied by sharp, almost unpleasant vibrations. However, I find the «Spin» pistol coolest, whose automatic firing bursts are accompanied by jerky pulses in the trigger.

Even away from the shooting action, the haptic feedback is convincing – including fine details like the protagonist's audible footsteps. I don't care that «Control» doesn't use motion control, the touchpad, or the speaker. Remedy focuses on the essentials. With success.

I'm curious how the successor «Control Resonant» will feel.

«Saros»

«Saros» is a blast. Housemarque's hardcore shooter works so well, among other things, because the Finnish development studio knows how to use the PS5 controller correctly. I feel every step, every laser burst fired, every hit I take. The haptic feedback is not just a gimmick, but conveys valuable information in hectic gameplay moments. Similar to «Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart», I activate different firing modes depending on how hard I press the adaptive triggers.

In short: Without the DualSense controller, «Saros» wouldn't be the same game. It's just a shame there's no gyro aiming. Shoutout also to «Returnal» – the first PS5 work from Housemarque that laid the foundation for «Saros».

«Sackboy: A Big Adventure»

Before Astro Bot was crowned the de facto mascot of Playstation, there was little Sackboy. With his «Big Adventure», the sack-face already convinced at the PS5 launch with a wide range of cleverly used DualSense features.

Movement and jumps with the little brown rascal feel different depending on the surface. The feedback ranges from subtle (sliding on smooth surfaces with sharp vibrations) to massive (knocking away enemies). In some music levels, I feel the beat with precise vibrations in the controller. The speaker is used for various sound effects, such as collecting items or virtual deaths. If Sackboy grabs an item, I feel resistance in the R2 trigger. Motion control is also used in some levels where I manipulate platforms with movements of the controller.

An all-around successful gimmick buffet that fits perfectly into the playful world of Sackboy. Only the touchpad is left out.

Do you feel the beat? I do. Literally. In the controller.

«Bugsnax»

Speaking of PS5 launch games: «Bugsnax». A quirky creature collector and one of the first PS Plus games for the platform. «Bugsnax» also works with a «normal» controller, but it's much more fun on the PS5. I catch cute little bugs that look like snacks with various gadgets and traps. Each item has individual vibration and resistance patterns as well as sound effects, which sometimes also sound from the controller. It's just a shame that with all the creative ideas, motion control and the touchpad are forgotten.

Every gadget works differently. Here I'm catching a donut bug with a remote-controlled umbrella trap (what a sentence).

«Days Gone Remastered»

My motorcycle in «Days Gone» is arguably the most important – and, let's be honest, most likable – character in the game. Without the vehicle, protagonist Deacon St. John is lost. It's only logical, then, that developer studio Bend invested a lot of time in the haptic feedback of the bike for the PS5 remaster. While I speed through the post-apocalypse, drift, and flee from zombies, I feel the different surfaces. Grass, gravel, wet asphalt, dry asphalt. Awesome.

The motion control for aiming is okay, nothing more. I wish for more setting options. The adaptive triggers are used solidly with different resistance when shooting. Through the controller speakers, I occasionally hear radio transmissions, and on the touchpad, I swipe in four directions to open different menu items.

Overall, a successful package – «Days Gone Remastered» is the best way to experience this mindless (meant as a compliment) zombie spectacle because of the PS5 controller.

«Death Stranding 2»

Sony: «Which DualSense features do you want to use in your game?»
Kojima: «Yes.»

«Death Stranding 2» sets off a true firework of gimmicks from the very first second. Computer sound effects are constantly coming from the speakers. A «beep» here, a «bup» there. The haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are constantly used both when driving and when walking around with Sam. Especially cool: the more I carry, the harder I feel the vibrations of Sam's steps.

«Death Stranding 2» uses motion control for gyro aiming and to calm the screaming Bridge Baby Lou with gentle swaying movements. With clicks on the touchpad, I shout into the area myself.

«I'm Sam.»

«Hello?»

«Anybody here?!»

Now the only question is: after his Playstation love-breakup, will Kojima also rely on such fun DualSense gimmicks in his next project?

«Deathloop»

Similar to «Call of Duty», «Deathloop» offers an insane number of setting options with which I can shape the gyro aiming to my preferences. Aiming works flawlessly with it and is damn fun. Of course, the triggers in Arkane's shooter also react to different weapon types. But the French studio came up with a particularly cool twist: some weapons occasionally jam and block the R2 trigger. I love such creative ideas.

«Deathloop» uses the DualSense speaker extensively. Radio transmissions regularly sound from the controller, and when shooting, I hear empty shells falling from the weapon. The haptic feedback is also convincing with an amazing vibration range and precision when shooting, running, climbing, and sneaking.

I have to admit: when the game was released in 2021, it didn't really grab me. After reinstalling and playing «Deathloop» for this post, I want to give the quirky shooter a second chance. That's the magic of the DualSense controller.

Damn, the weapon is jamming again.

«Ratshaker»

The less you know about this disturbing game, the better. That's why I'll keep it short. In «Ratshaker», you run through pixelated 3D levels armed with a rat. With movements of the controller, you shake it; with the L2 trigger, you strangle it. While you torture the helpless animal, you feel resistance in the shoulder buttons and hear it screaming or wheezing from the speakers. As written: disturbing. But a good example of the creative use of DualSense features.

«Gran Turismo 7»

The doctoral thesis in the field of haptic feedback. Of all the games on this list, «Gran Turismo 7» probably uses the vibration frequencies of the PS5 controller most precisely. The haptic feedback conveys information about the condition of the road and my car. The L2 and R2 triggers react with dynamic resistance when braking and accelerating. I know real pros play the racing simulator with a steering wheel – but my god, the game feels phenomenal with the DualSense.

I also like how the developer studio Polyphony Digital relies on gimmicks in addition to these functionally valuable features. For example, I can steer the cars with motion control – «Mario Kart Wii» flashbacks! I use the touchpad to signal. Depending on where I click, left, right, or with both blinkers. Unnecessary? Yes. Fun? Oh yes!

«Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl»

The Ukrainian studio GSC Game World really put in the effort for the PS5 port of «Stalker 2». The motion control for aiming is precise and offers many setting options. The use of adaptive triggers and haptic feedback works like in other shooters – but the trigger resistance and controller vibrations could be a bit more precise and varied.

The use of the speaker is particularly successful. I hear (damn loud!) radio transmissions and sound effects from gadgets, like the ominous clicking of the RAD counter from the controller. The touchpad gimmicks are also nice – for example, I play guitar by the campfire with swipe gestures, similar to «The Last of Us Part 2».

Bonus: Tips for all feedback fetishists

To conclude, two tips to get the maximum out of the DualSense feedback.

If you want to feel the awesome vibrations when navigating through the PS5 menus, follow these steps: Settings > Accessibility > Controller > «Haptic feedback when navigating the console» > turn on.

This setting causes the controller to vibrate every time you move the cursor through the menus or click on something. I love it. My PS5 feels so much more alive.

Activate here to enjoy vibrations. Bzzzt.

If you want to experience the maximum power of the vibration and trigger functions, deactivate the integrated microphone in the controller – to do this, press the mic button in the center of the controller below the Playstation button. If the microphone is running, the motors are throttled so that your voice isn't drowned out. So: mute and let yourself be shaken.
