Don’t have the spare cash for a real safari in Africa? Off to Zurich! The new Lewa Savannah recently opened at Zurich Zoo. The exhibit impresses with generous open spaces and was designed to increase visitors’ interest in African wildlife and raise awareness about endangered species and habitats.
Spanning 5.6 hectares, the Lewa Savannah is home to fifteen types of animals and Zurich Zoo’s largest exhibit. The largest communities are made up of white rhinos, Somali giraffes, Grévy's zebras, impala, scimitar oryxes, ostriches and helmeted guineafowl. All of them live together in this large outdoor savannah area. This is where they forage, take baths in the mudhole or drink at the waterhole.
The vocally talented grey parrots have their own aviary, which is accessible to visitors. In the giraffe house, transparent tubes make the underground life and strict social hierarchy of the naked mole-rats visible to spectators. In the Lewa village near the big baobab tree, visitors can watch the meerkats in their very own enclosure or observe Dahomey cattle graze next to the Lewa airstrip. The mighty Kopje rock is where porcupines, pancake tortoises, plated lizards and the impressive spotted hyenas meet.
The Lewa Savannah aims to spark zoo visitors' interest in animals and create awareness about the threats to biodiversity. The exhibit also highlights the zoo’s connection to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya. Zurich Zoo has been supporting the reserve, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, since 1998. Their commitment includes the fight against poaching, reducing conflicts between humans and – by creating wildlife corridors, for example – rhino relocation to newly protected areas and socio-economic projects for the local population. The Lewa Savannah in Zurich strives to encourage zoo visitors to become actively involved in the conservation of endangered animal species and habitats by means of a link with Lewa in Kenya.

After spending many years in southern Africa as a tour guide and actively being involved in animal welfare, I'm now taking on the challenge of e-commerce. My ideal day starts before sunrise and includes time outdoors and popcorn for dinner (why not?!)
