At less than 250 grams, this mini drone weighs as much as a smartphone. Yet, it's more than just a toy.

Folded up, the DJI Mavic Mini measures 140×82×57 mm. It weighs 249 grams – including the battery and ready to take off. This makes it exceptionally portable for a drone that’s more than just a toy.

With a weight of less than 250 grams, this drone is freed from certain regulations. However, this mainly affects the USA. In Switzerland, the limit is 500 grams (see the drone guide of the FOCA). This limit is to be lowered to 250 grams in 2020 in agreement with the EU. However, light drones are only exempt from needing a permit if they're not equipped with a camera.

Camera

Of course the Mavic Mini has a camera. It takes photos at 12 megapixels and videos at 2.7K - 2720 x 1530 pixels, which is between Full HD and 4K. The aperture of the lens is f/2.8 and the close-up limit is one metre. The built-in gimbal stabilises the camera on three axes. To take photos and videos, you need an SD card – the Mavic Mini has no built-in memory.

No obstacle-detecting sensors

Mavic Mini comes with a remote control that works together with a smartphone and the corresponding DJI Fly App. It displays a live video on your screen, whereby the range of HD videos (720p) is two kilometres.

The app offers tutorials, triggers a few simple manoeuvres and can return home on its own. With optimal conditions (no wind), the Mavic Mini reaches a flight time of 30 minutes – according to DJI.

Unlike the large Mavic Pro, the Mini drone has no side sensors and therefore can't detect obstacles. It does, however, have a removable propeller guard.

The DJI Mavic Mini is expected to be available from 11 November. You can now pre-order this drone or win one: we're giving away a DJI Mavic Mini. Just click on the participate button below.

My interest in IT and writing landed me in tech journalism early on (2000). I want to know how we can use technology without being used. Outside of the office, I’m a keen musician who makes up for lacking talent with excessive enthusiasm.
