digitec photo competition: Our favourite portraits unveiled

The winners of our portrait photo competition have been picked. Finally!
The selection process took a little longer than expected. As this is often the case, we did not publish a fixed date for the publication of the winners. So it’s unsurprising that some participants asked us how long we would be. We would like to thank everybody for their patience and will try to avoid creating that kind of uncertainty the next time round.
Without further ado, let’s proceed to the selection. We received around 400 entries on social media and by e-mail. Many of them were bursting with creativity or just brilliantly implemented. The selection we made was totally subjective. Having said that, our jury did consist of four people. All shortlisted photos were perfectly crafted, so I found it was extremely difficult to say one was better than the other. The other jury members (Denny Phan, Thomas Kunz and Danilo Costantino probably struggled just as much.
Congratulations to all winners and thanks to everyone who took part!
1st place: Josy (by e-mail)

A striking face that truly stands out from the crowd. We were all fascinated by this face that is marked by life. At first glance, the gentleman comes across as grumpy and sceptical but his eyes are full of mischief and life. Not an everyday expression but a natural one.
2nd place: mo.gaya

This reporter-style photo tells a story that is exceptional in many ways. It’s rare to see portraits in landscape format. Here, it adds to the cinematic atmosphere. This can also be said for the choice of black and white and very dim lighting. The light shining onto the face in the forefront allows the rest to be in the dark without making the picture unclear.
3rd place: plvrized

This is a totally staged photo that wants to be just that. It’s all about aesthetics. Both the person and the landscape are visually appealing in their own right. In addition, the colours are perfectly matched. Yet, the model is well separated from the background. A truly successful composition.
3rd place: nickel_finn

Our jury gave the same number of points to two pictures. This put them in joint third place. Photographing yourself in a mirror is not the most original idea, but in this picture, everything is right. Old meets new is the theme that penetrates all layers of this picture – from the vintage look of the hotel to the photographer’s outfit. A detail we particularly enjoyed: The reflection of the lamps in the lens.
5th place: jonathan.portraits

6th place: kamba.world

7th place: scheinwerferlicht

8th place: martial.perceive

9th place: davidhagmannphotography

10th place: Said (by e-mail)

The prizes
This was up for grabs. The winner of first place got first pick. Then it was the runner-up’s turn. And so on and so forth. After all, it is not necessarily the most expensive item that will go first.
