This is how the second and final preliminary round of the CS:GO: Summer Cup ended
by Philipp Rüegg
Over 100 teams battled for victory in the CS:GO Summer Cup. The four best teams faced each other in the final last Saturday and unpacked all their skills.
A stifling heat, stuffy air, a small room and ten players at a time in maximum concentration. That was the final of the first CS:GO Summer Cup. The event organised by digitec, Logitech and mYinsanity ended last Saturday in Zurich. More precisely, in the eStudios in the middle of Mrs Gerold's garden.
While spectators watched the matches in a small public viewing area outside, the 20 finalists were sweating it out for victory inside. The four teams from Size Matters, Beyond Your Dreams, Swiss Finest and SPG eSports faced each other. Unlike in the qualifying phase, not just one round of best of 16 was played, but three. The tournament lasted correspondingly long. The first shots were fired at 12 noon and the last ones in the evening at around 8 pm. Even excessive gamblers know how exhausting this can be. Especially when you have to be highly focussed the whole time. As the afternoon progressed, the temperature in the studio rose and the air not only crackled with tension, it also smelled accordingly. You could clearly see the participants' exhaustion. That's why it's rightly called: e-SPORT.
In the first semi-final, Size Matters and Beyond Your Dreams faced each other. The latter were clearly one of the liveliest teams, loudly celebrating or cursing every action. Apparently, the team has also jumped down each other's throats at other events when things didn't go as planned. However, their enthusiasm paid off and in the end Beyond Your Dreams triumphed 2:1 in a thrilling game.
The second semi-final was contested by the mixed team Swiss Finest and SPG eSports. The predictions of star player Chilla that pro teams could fail to live up to their expectations proved to be true. It was a very close game that Swiss Finest managed to win.
Swiss Finest and Beyond Your Dreams therefore faced off in the final. Both teams gave their all once again and emotions ran high. The ten players offered the spectators great entertainment. In the end, Beyond Your Dreams came out on top with unique plays. They took the overall victory in just two maps with a commanding 2:0.
You can watch the whole tournament on Twitch.
During the afternoon, there was a little excitement. Caster Everlast dropped out in the middle of the tournament due to a family emergency. Royal from Size Matters, who had already been eliminated at the time, spontaneously stood in for him
.
Apart from such unavoidable incidents, the tournament ran like clockwork. The tournament organisation around Manuel Oberholzer from mYinsanity proved to be experienced. "What was particularly special for us was that we were able to organise an offline final again. These are still quite rare in Switzerland," says Manuel. For eStudios, on the other hand, it was only their second e-sports event. But they mastered the live broadcast with flying colours and even had enough capacity to entertain the spectators in attendance.
Whether the CS:GO Summer Cup will take place next year remains to be seen. A lot depends on the sponsors, says Manuel. With 1500 spectators over the entire tournament, at least the interest among gamers was definitely there.
What did you think? Did you take part or just watch? Should it potentially be CS:GO again next time or would you prefer another game?
Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
