would this cable work from a macbook (HDMI) as a connection to a mid-2010 IMac (Mini DisplayPort )?

If it is a 21.5 inch Imac, then unfortunately no. According to the practical tips (https://praxistipps.chip.de/imac-als-b...), this Imac is not compatible. I bought this cable this week for exactly this reason for a 21.5 inch Imac, but unfortunately it didn't work. It should work with a 27 inch Imac.

Unfortunately, I can't say. I use the cable for a Mac Book Air from 2013 to connect it to a Samsung PC monitor with HDMI input. This works.
