What is the shelf life of the paste? With unopened tube? If the tube is opened? Does the paste have an expiry date? How does the paste react when it comes into contact with air?
On average, a PC lasts about 4 years...
I used Arctic Silver 5 in 2010 on my gaming & 3D render PC with an Intel Core i7 Extreme 980X.
I have only replaced the paste once so far.
When I replaced it, the paste was no longer so fresh and slightly dried, but was absolutely fine for 4~5 years of use.
In these 9 years, I have not noticed any temperature fluctuations that would have indicated poor heat conduction.
It is always difficult to say how long a paste will last because it depends on too many factors such as how often and at what intervals it is used:
- How often and at what intervals the paste is heated and cooled again.
- humidity of the air
- Room temperature when the PC is switched off
- Amount of paste used
- How hard the paste is pressed
etc....
But in the end, it has to be said that a PC is on average out of service after 4 years anyway, so if you still want to keep the box then just change the paste. Then you don't have to worry about it anymore if it bothers you so much. I know people who replace the paste after just one year, but sometimes they have even worse results because they didn't apply it so well the second time.
10 for that period of time is nothing.
However, I would certainly not use the paste after 4 years for a refresher, for that you simply buy a new one.
Otherwise, buy liquid metal.
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone as it is more difficult to handle and damages the block, but it will certainly last longer.
Don't know what you might want to use the paste for ;)
Arctic Silver 5 is one of the most popular thermal pastes in the world...
I think you won't go wrong if the specifications of the paste otherwise fit your purpose.
Hope this helps you a little.
