There is a version with a white rim and a version with a black rim. Is the version with the white rim brighter because it is translucent (the whole lamp lights up in the pictures)?

I have the white version. The edge is not really translucent. I would use the product picture on the box as a reference.

The rim of this lamp is made of 2mm thick steel, thus light-impermeable. This ring has a distance of approx. 20mm to the ceiling, therefore the light goes under the lamp and between the ceiling and the lamp.
