The backlight levels in standby are according to the manual:
Very bright, Bright and Dark.
Dark = no backlighting or so dark that you can still faintly see the current time.
At the moment I have a radio alarm clock, which illuminates the bedroom quite well even with the darkest backlighting.

According to my research, it is dark with very little background light that you can still see it in the middle of the night.
