If so, would it be possible to switch the radio on and off with a button bar without having to press the play button? We would like to place the radio where it is difficult to reach.

I operate the radio on the mobile with the app UNDOK (Frontier Smart Technologies).
You can also switch it on and off, change stations, search for stations, save stations, change the volume, 
switch between DAB and Internet, etc.
It's very user-friendly.

I haven't tried this yet, but I think it won't work with a safety edge. It's better to use Corrado's suggestion.
