In MacOS, does this version also require the Logitech software for the full range of functions, or is this installation unnecessary due to native integration? This is quite an energy hog, so it would be a clear advantage to switch from my otherwise identical mouse to the Mac edition.

Unfortunately, most of them are the same product. The Mac edition does not come with a Unifying dongle.
