I bought this product because I would like to connect my work laptop to the screen and I had too few USB ports on my laptop. Unfortunately, my laptop does not have a USB-C port. So I bought an adapter with a normal USB port. Plugged everything in but the screen is not receiving anything. Is this because of the adapter? It's even a product from the same brand...

No USB-C port, no video. The adapter uses Displayport over USB-C, which requires a USB-C output on the computer. Compared to USB 2.0, USB-C is a _significantly_ more complex standard, but it also offers much more.
