I already have one set. Can I use another set in the same household (without controlling two switches at a time if I only want to switch one)?

Yes, if the receivers are far enough apart, it's not a problem.
The second could work. The receivers are registered with the controller, so one switch should respond to controller 1 (CHA), the other only to controller 2 (CHA). Try it out or buy Steffen MD36Y - the system code can be set via DIP switch.
